INEST (The Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences) was established in April 2012, founded by the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences and University of Science and Technology of China Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are four research offices and one integrated office, it has established the key laboratory of neutron transport theory and radiation safety of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Nuclear Emergency Professional Technical Support Center of Anhui Province and the Institute-Level Public Technology Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with more than 200 staff  and students.

The INEST conducts basic, forward-looking and strategic research in fields related to nuclear safety and advanced nuclear technology, research interests include material and structural safety, reactor and system safety, radiation protection and environmental safety, nuclear emergency and public safety. It has undertaken more than 200 important projects at home and abroad, including the National “973”/“863” Programs, the National Key R&D Programs, the International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor (ITER)  program and so on, related achievements won National Natural Science second-class Award, National Energy Science and Technology Progress Award and Anhui Province Awards.

The INEST has three major experimental platforms: the integrated experimental platform for liquid metal circuits and Materials Technology, the Integrated Experimental Platform for advanced nuclear energy system simulation and nuclear technology, and the integrated experimental platform for high-current radiation physics and detection technology More than 100 doctoral and master students in Nuclear Energy Science and Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Materials and Chemical Engineering, Electronic Information, etc. It has established stable cooperation and exchange relations with Russia, the United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries and regions, and co-founded the International Symposium on Fusion neutron sources using pneumatic magnetic mirrors with the Budkor Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2018, they co-launched the international fusion neutron source (Aliance) Big Science initiative based on pneumatic magnetic mirrors, 2021 the ALIANCE International Working Group and International Advisory Council,Yu Jie, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute, and researcher of the Standing Deputy Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ivanov, researcher of the Budekol Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, served as chairman and co-chairman of the International Working Group, respectively, the Secretariat of the International Working Group is located in Hefei Institutes of Physical Science.
