The 13th China-Japan Symposium on Materials for Advanced Energy Systems and Fission and Fusion Engineering (CJS-13) held in Hefei, China during Sept. 26-29, 2016

Auther: Xiaodong Mao / Zunqi Xiao Count: Update time: 2016-10-09

The CJS-13, hosted by Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology (INEST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was successfully held in the Hefei Science Island during Sept. 26-29, 2016. About 270 experts and scholars from more than 60 institutions related with nuclear energy in Japan and China participated in the symposium, making it the largest one in the CJS series symposia. Prof. Qunying Huang from INEST chaired this symposium, and Prof. Akira Hasegawa from Tohoku University was the co-chair of the symposium. Prof. Yican Wu addressed welcome greetings to participants on behalf of the hosting institute.

Nuclear energy plays a key role in world energy, and material research is the basis for nuclear energy development. During the four day’s symposium, experts and scholars discussed in depth about the advanced materials R&D and engineering designs for new generation nuclear systems, focusing on the hot issues such as the reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steels, oxide dispersion strengthened steels, irradiation effects and tungsten materials for fusion reactors and other aspects. Participants also visited world leading facilities developed by INEST during the symposium, such as liquid heavy metal experimental loops and high intensity D-T fusion neutron generator HINEG, and applauded the outstanding achievements that INEST has made. This symposium is deemed to enhance the in-depth cooperation between China and Japan in materials development for advanced nuclear systems, and accelerate the reactor materials research for both sides.

INEST is one of the key units for advanced materials development for nuclear systems in China. Sticking to the faith of “Safe & Clear Energy” with the target of industrial application, INEST has led the development of environmental friendly irradiation resistant structural material: China Low-Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel. The ingot has reached a production scale of 6.4 tons, making it ready for industrial applications. Authoritative experts accredited that “Its irradiation resistance, corrosion resistance and high temperature mechanical properties reached world-leading level”.

CJS symposium is a historical large scale bilateral meeting between China and Japan in the field of materials research for nuclear systems. It was initiated in 1993 in Hefei, China and is held every two years in China and Japan alternatively.

The CJS-13 was also supported by the Society of Reactor Physics and Nuclear Materials (SRPNM), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), China Center of Advanced Science and Technology (CCAST), Japan-China Science and Technology Exchange Association (JCSTEA) and others.
